This bolo exemplifies heavy molten-silver appliqué, a mid-century Navajo technique in which semi-molten silver is built up in layers on a sheet to create a “lava-flow” texture.
The method was favored by Gallup-area Navajo smiths in the late 1950s–1970s.
The central cabochon is, most likely Smokey KIngman turquoise (Nevada) with tight gray web matrix and vivid blue-green color; coral accents are natural Mediterranean. Silver raindrop appliqués and rope borders frame the design. Hand-cast arrowhead dangles finish the piece,
symbolizing protection and strength.
The Bennett PAT. PEND. slide mechanism was used approximately 1957–1972, fixing the date range. All elements are hand-soldered and consistent with authentic Navajo workshop construction.
Smokey Kingman turquoise is distinguished by its medium to dark blue hues
combined with a distinctive black matrix, giving each piece a striking,
one-of-a-kind appearance.
Color and Matrix
Smokey Kingman belongs to the Kingman turquoise family and is recognized for its medium to dark high blue color, which varies from piece to piece, reflecting
the natural variation of the Kingman mines in Arizona.
What makes it particularly unique is its black matrix, which forms vein-like patterns across the stone. These patterns are a natural feature left from the host rock and are often referred to as a “spiderweb” or streaked matrix.
Each stone’s matrix pattern is inherently unique,
Ensuring that no two pieces look
exactly alike.
Stabilization and Versatility
Smokey Kingman turquoise is typically stabilized, which means it has been
treated to enhance durability without significantly altering its natural color or matrix. This process allows the stone to withstand use in various jewelry forms, from cabochons to beads or inlays,
while retaining its rich, distinctive appearance. The stabilization makes it suitable for everyday wear and ensures that its beauty and structure endure over time .
Smokey Kingman is highly sought after.
This bolo is extremely rare!
